Starting his professional life as a Registered Surveyor for the RTA Ian was involved in engineering Surveys and cadastral surveys firstly in Sydney then later in the Upper Tablelands area. He commenced in Private practice in Surveying in the Glen Innes Area in 1982 and entered Law School at UNE in 1996. Ian also pursued studies in Urban and Regional Planning. Ian commenced his Law practice in 2002 in both Coffs Harbour and Glen Innes. Though he is a now a sole practitioner practicing at Glen Innes only the name of Mac Donald and MacDonald Solicitors has been retained from the time when his ex wife Shirley practiced also with the firm.

Ian holds Honours Degrees in Law (UNE) and Surveying (UNSW) and a Graduate Certificate in Urban and Regional Planning (UNE). He brings a wealth of knowledge on Land and property Law and understands the Development Industry. He has served a term as a Local Government Counsellor and acted for and against Local Government in related matters.

Ian has also had considerable experience in Family Law taking matters through to Final Hearings. Another interest has been matters before the Consumer Trade and Tenancy Tribunal. His particular strength is to really listen and to bring empathy and concern to the matter at hand.
